Band Competition Recap
Saturday, May 9th, sixty HFCS band members from our Beginning Band (grades 5, 6, & 7) and our High School Band (grades 8 and up) traveled to Edmond and Oklahoma City to perform in the Heartland Musicfest, the largest school music festival in the country. They performed on the same stage as bands from Broken Arrow, Jenks, Owasso, and more.
The awards our students earned were as follows:
High School Band:
Superior ratings from both judges, resulting in a Sweepstakes Award
Outstanding Section Awards:
Low Brass Section: Dylan Merle, Augustine Lian, En Mung, Jacob Snow, and Will Snow
Clarinet Section: Patrick Massell, Jack Harris, and Max Whistler
Outstanding Individual Performance Awards:
Leona Cox (French Horn)
Isaac Fugikawa and Nicholas Snow (Percussion)
In addition, one special award called “Sectional Brilliance” was selected from all bands performing across both festival sites that day. This award was given to our French horn section, which at our school consists of just one student: Leona Cox.
Beginning Band:
Superior ratings from both judges, resulting in a Sweepstakes Award
Outstanding Section Awards:
Clarinets: Samuel Gross, Asia Harris, Declan Johnson, Priscilla Munoz, Declan Todd, Natalie Edwards, Evelyn Graves, Samuel Gray, Maria Martinez, Lincoln Pate, Christina Robinson, Gabe Talsma, and Catherine Thomas
Trombones: Dominic Frey, Luke Sullivan, Henry Gray, Isabella Harris, Timothy Petrucelli, Monica Romanello, Liam Spurgeon, and Ashton Young
Finally, from all beginning bands performing across both festival sites that day, our Beginning Band received the festival’s “Rising Star” Award. The judges specifically commented on the impressive size from a school our size and their age range of the group since most schools don't start band until 6th grade, as well as the quality of their performance.
Well done students, Mrs. Snow and thank you chaperones!
